The importance of reading and related skills cannot be over emphasized. Studies show a love of reading leads to greater success in school and a life-long appreciation for learning. In the nuclear industry where strong science, math and engineering skills are needed for workplace success, it is imperative to advance reading skills to ensure a talented workforce. Recognizing the significance of reading, the National Education Association (NEA) recently held its 16th annual “Read Across America Day” on March 1.
The NEA’s initiative encourages libraries, schools, organizations and individuals to celebrate the importance of reading. “Read Across America” was established as a birthday celebration for the famed author Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. The program provides ideas that can be put into action throughout the year to develop current and future readers. Recommendations include having a book exchange, bedtime reading, starting a book club and other ways for families to read together.
Nuclear professionals are also encouraged to celebrate the initiative. With current technology, it has never been easier to find ways to read. Several nuclear-related books and resources for adults and children are listed below. Take a moment to enhance your knowledge, educate your children and celebrate the joy of reading!
Learn about nuclear energy, its history and the science:
Atomic Awakening by James A. Mahaffey
Offers an overview of the phenomenon of nuclear power in an age where renewable energy and climate change have become the defining concerns. Mr. Mahaffey is also the author of a nuclear-related series beginning with “The History of Nuclear Power” and “The Future of Nuclear Power.”
Bluebells and Nuclear Energy by Albert B. Reynolds
Written by an educator, this book is designed for teachers, students and the public. It offers an understandable overview of radiation, its applications, how nuclear power plants work and why they are safe.
Controlling the Atom – The Beginnings of Nuclear Regulation, 1946-1962, by George T. Mazuzan and J. Samuel Walker
An extensive discussion about the regulation of nuclear technology.
Megawatts and Megatons: The Future of Nuclear Power and Nuclear Weapons by Richard L. Garwin and Georges Charpak
A primer on two of the most important issues of our time: nuclear weapons and nuclear power. This delves into arms control issues and how nuclear power provides an environmentally responsible source of energy—in a way that avoids the hazards of weapons proliferation.
Nuclear Energy in the 21st Century: World Nuclear University Primer by Ian Hore-Lacy
A resource for educators, students and interested lay-people alike. It provides an introduction to nuclear science including aspects of technology, industry applications and answers to public concerns.
Nuclear Energy: What Everyone Needs to Know by Charles D. Ferguson
An account of the key facts about nuclear energy. Features a discussion of the recent nuclear crisis in Japan and its ramifications.
Nuclear Energy Leadership: Lessons Learned from U.S. Operators by Mary Jo Rogers, Ph.D.
The book provides suggestions and tools from the best of the nuclear industry. It includes case studies on how lessons from the best nuclear operators can be applied to other organizations to markedly improve production and safety performance.
Radioactivity, Ionizing Radiation and Nuclear Energy by Jiri Hala and James D. Navratil
Includes information about radioactivity, nuclear reactions, ionizing radiation, nuclear energy and environmental aspects. Also offers responses to criticism of nuclear and radiation technologies.
Radiation and Modern Life: Fulfilling Marie Curie’s Dream by Alan E. Waltar
A reflection on how Curie’s work enriched our daily lives, including examples of radiation's uses in agriculture, medicine, electricity, industry, transportation, public safety, environmental protection, space exploration and even archaeology and the arts.
Educate your children about nuclear energy:
Nuclear Power by Tea Benduhn
Teaches children about the use of nuclear power and how scientists are working to make it a safe source for the future.
Nuclear Energy by Troon Harrison Adams
A look at how to save the planet from pollution caused from burning fossil fuels by learning to conserve energy and developing alternative energy sources.
Nuclear Power by Amelia Frahm
In this picture book, characters explain how a nuclear power plant works in simple terms and using concepts children can understand in order to combat misinformation about a valuable energy source.
