Ensuring the white glove treatment each and every day
No matter where you get your electricity, there is a fuel source involved. With solar, the light is collected with photovoltaics to create energy. Fossil-fuel plants burn gas. Nuclear is a bit different: Nuclear plants don’t burn anything to generate...
Five things you didn’t know about the refueling outage scheduling group
In the electric utility industry, “outage” can be an unwelcome word. However, for nuclear plants, scheduled refueling outages mean greater efficiency and reliability. While nuclear plants produce low-carbon energy around the clock, every 18 to 24 months...
Giant turbines make the move to Catawba Nuclear Station
Catawba Nuclear Station in South Carolina took a big step in preparing for its refueling outage this spring.
The operative word being big.
Three low-pressure turbines, each weighing 184 tons, were transported by rail to Rock Hill then moved onto...
See how a nuclear power plant refuels
While nuclear power plants produce low-carbon energy around the clock, every 18 to 24 months the plants shut down for roughly a month for maintenance, inspections and refueling.
Why nuclear outages are actually a good thing
In the electric utility industry, “outage” can be an unwelcome word. However, for nuclear plants, scheduled refueling outages mean greater efficiency and reliability.
Out with the Old, In with the New (Fuel)
The days are starting to get longer, March Madness is in full swing and pastel Easter candy has hit the shelves. Spring has sprung. As many of us start to leave our windows open while we swap our winter coats for rain jackets, thousands across the ...
Fall: Prime Time for Outages
For most people, the transition from summer to fall means back to school, the kickoff of football season and the leaves changing colors. Fall has a different meaning for those in the nuclear industry: outage season.
The Fuel in the Reactor Core
In this the second-part of three-part series where we examine the phases of the nuclear fuel cycle. To read the first part of our series, click here. Part 2 From Fabrication Facility to Reactor After nuclear fuel assemblies are built at the fuel ...
