World Nuclear Energy Day is held on Dec. 2 each year to commemorate the anniversary of the first nuclear chain reaction achieved by Enricho Fermi in 1942.
Fifteen years later, on Dec. 2, 1957, the first commercial-sized reactor in Shippingport, P.A. was started. This year's theme, Power to the People, celebrates the ever-growing support of the positive benefits nuclear brings to the world.

At Duke Energy we will have our Nuclear Education Centers open for walk-in visitors from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2.
At Brunswick Nuclear Plant, bring your family and friends to see the Energy and Education Center (8520 River Road, S.E., Southport, N.C. 28461) and while there get your holiday photo taken with the Brunswick Santa Claus. Photos will be first come, first served.
At Harris Nuclear Plant, come and explore the Energy and Environmental Center (3932 New Hill-Holleman Road, New Hill, N.C. 27562) to check out the exhibits on nuclear energy and enjoy tasty cookies. (Note: The Energy and Environmental Center will be open from 10 a.m. to noon.)
At McGuire Nuclear Station, join us at the EnergyExplorium (13339 McGuire Nuclear Station Road, Huntersville, N.C. 28078) to explore the exhibits and decorate cookies to celebrate.
At Oconee Nuclear Station, visit the World of Energy (7812 Rochester Hwy, Seneca, SC 29672) to check out the ongoing Festival of Trees display and learn about nuclear energy.
