Duke Energy Nuclear Employees Are a 'United' Front

Written by: Courtney Adair

Power isn’t the only thing Duke Energy provides.

Each year, nuclear employees donate countless volunteer hours and  thousands of dollars to United Way organizations.

In 2010, Catawaba, McGuire and Oconee nuclear station employees banded together in a “united” front to raise nearly $600,000 for United Ways in the counties surrounding the three sites. This money is distributed to dozens of non-profits in the Carolinas, based on community needs.

From dunking booths to donut sales and golf tournaments to poker runs, Duke Energy runs the gamut when it comes to fundraisers for the organization.

Not only do current employees step up to support United Way, but retirees volunteer as well.

“United Way has received immense support from Duke Energy employees through their campaign, special events and retirees, who help us with any type of project they think they can handle,” said Julie Capaldi, president of the United Way of Pickens County in South Carolina.

Starting with a kick-off event in late summer, every Duke Energy employee is sent an email giving them the opportunity to pledge money to United Way. As it turns out, most employees don’t stop there.

Addie Bradshaw, a Duke Energy spokesperson at Oconee Nuclear Station, often helps identify volunteer opportunities for the nuclear employees.

“Duke Energy is committed to helping the communities we serve,” she said. “By working together with United Way, we are able to greatly improve the lives of those in need around us.”

Capaldi said she can’t thank Duke Energy enough for the money raised.

“United Way works to improve education, help people achieve financial stability and promote healthy lives. Without Duke Energy, none of that would be possible,” she said. “They have such a huge impact on our communities.”
