To most, nuclear power is viewed as an energy source that helps power our world, but for PopAtomic Studios, nuclear power is a source of artistic inspiration.
PopAtomic Studios, founded by Suzy Hobbs, is an art organization located in Asheville, N.C., that’s creatively shifting public misconceptions about nuclear energy through artwork.
Why nuclear art? Through Suzy’s career, she learned firsthand the success of using art to educate, and she also saw the need for a new way to promote nuclear energy. In 2008, Suzy put her artistic skills together with her passion for nuclear power to form PopAtomic Studios.
Suzy and her team combine colorful visuals with nuclear facts to increase awareness of the nuclear industry. They specialize in creating custom artwork, public service announcements and wearable merchandise like T-Shirts and tote bags.
Along with creating and selling pro-nuclear art, PopAtomic Studios also actively inspires young people through educational outreach. The team visits schools, universities and labs to speak about the studio’s mission and to offer interactive lessons on nuclear energy.
In May 2011, Suzy shared her studio’s passion for art and nuclear power at a Women in Nuclear (WIN) luncheon at Duke Energy’s McGuire Nuclear Station in Mecklenburg County, N.C. In addition to her discussion with employees, she had the opportunity to tour the plant and the EnergyExplorium. Suzy describes her McGuire experience in a PopAtomic Studios blog post.
